📊 Terms Made Simple
Gestational Age: Measured from last menstrual period, not conception. So "6 weeks pregnant" means ~4 weeks since conception. Full term is 39-40 weeks.
Viability: The point at which a baby could survive outside the womb with medical support. Currently ~24 weeks, though outcomes improve significantly after 28 weeks.
GD (Gestational Diabetes): Tested between weeks 24-28 via glucose tolerance test. Affects ~10% of pregnancies. Managed with diet, exercise, and sometimes insulin.
Preeclampsia: Dangerous condition with high blood pressure (>140/90) after week 20. Symptoms: headaches, vision changes, swelling. Report BP above 140 to your OB immediately.
